Evinrude? What happened that Evinrude has grown from a high-end so you do not want, then again?
What happened with Evinrude is that until about 1996, they were owned by a company on the OMC company financially healthy and produce a great product, and like most businesses are now a few days, the top started to take cash from the company until they have to declare bankruptcy December 22, 2000. Meanwhile, product quality has declined and there was no customer support.
Bombardier Corporation bought the engine side of the OMC has been the line of Evinrude and Johnson outboard. They redesigned the engines to ensure there were no major problems. In fact, it was more than 13 months before they produced all the engines.
In 2004, Bombardier Recreational Products BRP "introduced the E-TEC engine the most advanced 2-stroke on the market.
I had not heard that before ... they may have been a little slower to offer a 4-stroke engine or something, I know a lot of 4 great shots that I saw were Yamaha. I 175 Evinrude on my boat, bass, and an old Evinrude 35 on a boat john little we have ... Both are great engines, I do not think I could say anything bad about them really.
I have a 2004 model 50 HP, much more advanced with "SLOW" mode when it heats up, it is much quieter than my other OMC engines. Evinrude parts are readily available (a little) on the spot, I did the water pump on a Yamaha 150 on Wed, I had to deal with their service department. I was told that the alcohol fuel mixture again no problem because the alcohol does not attract water? Really? "Alcohol" This is not "hygroscopic (attracts water), Yamaha has rewritten chemistry now? Less impressive to say the least, not good "pieces" of advice or support!
There was a time when outboards OMC were good, the average engine. Then three things happened: As many senior big company, they got greedy and looted the coffers, the Japanese competition began to eat their meals, and they came up with technology "Fitch" engine which was undesirable and to add insult often caught fire. JI default on collateral and bankruptcy. Finally, a great company, Bombardier-Canada purchased the names and a few residues, have taken the time to rethink the product, and is currently building the most engine market demand. No doubt, the new E-Tec engine is the best one, and Bombardier is just reaping the benefits. It is a story of rags to riches.
Evenrude made a mistake. It has been the engine Fich. It was an engine with a power, but I have great mileage and low emissions. I bought one in 1998. It was a horse 175. I have not had any problems with mine. It seemed to be mainly in the horse 200 and up. Power Heads went wrong and they could not keep cool enough smaller units, and created another major expense. Declining sales and warranty work being evil on their origin in a bankruptcy situation. They never recovered, and sold to Bombardier. A foreign company. They also have other companies that have been sold. The moral of this story is, "news is not always better" ..
