What is the difference between pre-1990 and Evinrude outboard engines Johnson? Most service manuals for them are Johnson / Evinrude. The outboard engines the same, badged differently.
Johnson and Evinrude two names of the same engines, manufactured by Outboard Marine Corp. The only difference was the paint and graphics.
For many years the factory Johnson Evinrude produces both 2 and 3 and Evinrude outboard of the cylinder. The plant produces two Johnson and Evinrude Johnson 4 and 6 cylinder outboards. Thus, your correct, they had sales and dealer organizations separate, but the engines are the same. In some cases, some parts are different as the bonnets. I hope this helps, Good Luck!
I do not know the end before -1990, but farther back, as in the 1950s through the 1970s Evinrude outboard engines had a reputation for quality a little higher. Whether true or not is another thing.
The Johnrudes beginning were the same, with some modifications, something about patents or firms that have seen the exact same year / model have different shafts, and control the minor.
My wife works in the service department of a boat dealer. She said that his appeal to the two engineers Johnrudes because they are so similar. Most parts are interchangeable.
They are the same, only the name is different.
I agree with Jim
