Owners' Association calculates that a full container load 20 feet container of dry goods float because its volume displaces 83,000 pounds of water, more than its weight of 30 tonnes or 66,000 pounds. Mathematically, it would float to 18 inches sticking out of the water. However, if the water penetrates and increases the weight of more than 83,000 pounds, the container will leak. Floating containers previously shot or exploded to sink and reduce the danger to ships because it was cheaper than the recovery cost for towing and recovery. This is now illegal because of the pollution risk it poses.

The Container Owners Association provides information collected from its members on the shipping container floating. How long to drift or container Cast down to the water will float before sinking depends on the container and its cargo. It is possible for containers to sink immediately or remain adrift for years. However, even empty containers are not watertight and sink almost immediately. The large cargo containers with low density but have a better chance of floating. Members of the COA said that the "sub-float" or container that is submerged just below the water level is a myth that can be refuted with the laws of physics.

Just how much cargo is lost at sea? Estimates vary between 2000-10000 containers per year. Accidents due to human error and natural disasters can occur unexpectedly. Everything that could go on a ship could be lost, car spare parts. Some, however, managed to float on the shore, including rubber shoes and rubber ducks. The consequences are not only economic, but also environmental costs. Oil and hazardous materials are transported by sea, which constitutes a serious harm to marine life after a spill. Piracy is also a possibility and there are fears that pirates and terrorists are involved. In future posts we will look closer to transport containers.
