What are the pieces of correspondence with a Mercruiser 470 engine? I bought a boat with two 470 series engines and one of them needs a crank work. Does anyone know of any automotive parts such as bearings and timing gear that trade with this engine? The engine uses a ford 460 cylinder head, piston, and rod, but the main bearings are not 460. Is this something to exchange or I'll have to deal with the leeches in marine stores? Thank you
Mercruiser offer "block time" in their catalog re-built. This could be the best option. In addition, you may need to update the exhaust manifold / risers of two engines, leaking coolant seals riser was one of the main factors of engine trouble. Antifreeze cooling system would enter the engine oil and cause bearing damage and seizure stud [usually # 4] piston. Contact me if you want, I'm one of those leeches "in the biz Navy, but have been known to be" friendly ", while the bloodshed was going on!
The Merc 470 is an I-4 with an aluminum block and head Merc one of a Ford 460 V-8. Valves, springs, etc., (head components) must be interchangeable.
Block rooms will not be like it is a little aluminum tailor for mercury. EG: The water pump is at the end of the cam, and not belt driven. This was / is a great point of failure because of leakage problems, which allows coolant into the crankcase.
If you can work on yourself you can look here;

Also, talk with "Machine Shops" in your area who make the engine work, such as sharpening cylinders and heads reshuffle, sometimes they may know of other sources to try.
Sounds like you're about to enter a Pandora's box. the 470 was great in its day but that day has disappeared. most of the additional parts were used, etc. If you want to build one, make sure you can acquire all the pieces before you spend too much money.
