Whath light should I buy for my bike. The Niterider Trinewt / wireless, or Light / Motion HID Arc Ultra? It is difficult to say without knowing what kind of driving you'll do, or speed. They are both good lights, but Worlds Apart light output.
Before continuing, let me suggest you check www.cambriabike.com, and www.jensonusa.com www.nashbar.com to see the killer deals they have during the Niterider Enduro (and perhaps another model, too) HID lamps. I saw them for $ 280 recently, and if you can get a coupon you'll save tons on a great light. I have the Light N Motion Arc NiMH and love ...... I got it on sale combined with a coupon at Nashbar for about 225 last year. Sweet!
Ok ..... so if you drive fast ..... seriously consider a dual halogen light (25W 35) or a HID model. If mountain biking, and you have the money, definitely go HID. The bulbs last forever, but yes, they are expensive to replace when you need it. Most have soft-start and / or non-start circuitry to help them last longer. Halogen bulbs are just as fragile, but cheaper and easy to replace. LED lights .... just forget it, they are not a problem! The Arc bulb is about $ 100 or a little more and you must send it to L & M for the replacement (not user serviceable), but they have 2-4 days turnaround. They chose to do to prevent injuries because the light can hold about 10,000 volts or a crazy amount of this kind. The guy there told me that during the racing season 24 hours, they are more time to four days, but normally they do it the same day and ship it back. After several owners Niterider products and deal with them for parts, etc., I much prefer Light N Motion now ..... Niterider not make products very well these days, much improved over their old tricks. Their customer service still sucks, though.
The Tri-Newt is not quite smart enough to keep outside the constituency beam ..... This can be exciting, but it can also put you at the top of a pothole or rock without much warning. 15W halogen is not really bright enough to go fast-fast, but it is decent. The Tri-Newt is similar in perceived light output compared to halogen 15W (light of different color, though).
The HID lights are comparable to a 35W - 40W halogen and swear that you lit the sun! I like mine, but I prefer to have a connection with either a low-watt bulb or an LED integrated (Niterider does this). The difference between 10W and 13W on the Arc is barely noticeable. HID lamps are so incredibly bright that I am totally confident doing jumps mild night ...... it's weird when you go into the dark space and do not see the landing until you close it! The light is bright enough that it makes it very safe and comfortable, though. I do not do that when I ride my 15W halogen, and I would not even consider any of the LED systems I've seen.
Regarding battery life, super long running time the LEDs are not something that I enjoyed from my night trips usually last two hours or less. The Arc does great, and I can get two decent rounds on a battery charge most of the time. material of the battery is something to consider, though. Ni-Cd is heavy and falls faster, but it will not last long in his life of NiMH batteries. NiMH is better with the execution, but it is still heavy compared to Lithium Ion. Get the best that fits in your price range.
Hope this helps ..... Enjoy! Driving at night is awesome! : O)
They are both great systems. I have a Nite Rider Digital Pro-12 (unfotunately they are not more) and it works very well. It features a dual-beam and a high setting of 32 watts. What I like about the dual-beam system is whether a blow lamp.
