What is the main difference between the server and the PC case? I recently purchased an HP computer with Vista. I'm used to assign recording with Windows XP and none of my audio equipment works properly with Vista, so I intend to build a computer for recording (with XP Pro 64bit). I wish it were a computer rack so I can mount it with other pro audio gear. Most cases I find are rack cases are server. Can I use a server as a case of a standard desktop unit top?
Yes, you can probably get away with it do it that way. Most rackmount servers are just very high power computers, so you will not use the machine at full capacity. But you could probably also find ways to use all that extra power for something.
Of course, you want to make sure it fits on your support. I do not know if an audio component rack has the same dimensions as a rack of servers.
Umm, good to have two power supplies for redundancy. If you leave the box does not fall. important for mission critical enterprise server Very. For you, maybe not so much, unless you plan to run 24/7/365 ... Flag
If your great in the audio recording that you would be better with an Apple Xserve

or Xserve RAID

Logic Studio

since the strength of Apple is producing audio and video.
Macs run Windows too.
Then you fail to buy a case of server components to desktop? If so, there is no problem with it, just make sure that if you buy the motherboard can support you put in. Meaning dimensions, cooling and diet.
Since you are looking to build another system just because Vista does not run your applications, you can consider this option:
