Finding the right personal flotation device
Summer is on its way and Canadians will soon take the lakes for another season of fun in the sun. But before jumping on board a ship, it is important to keep water safety top of mind.
"Each year nearly 200 people drown while boating, 87 percent of them were not wearing personal flotation devices," said Pat Gray, marketing manager of Stearns Canada "This staggering statistic just goes to show that wearing a PFD at all times could very well save your life - to make an investment in your safety and the safety belt. "
Keep children at Sea - How to adapt your child a PFD:
aec Choose a bright PFD has been approved by Transport Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard or Fisheries and Oceans Canada. Stearns offers infants, children and young PFD in a variety of colors that meet all Canadian safety standards PFD.
aec Children's PFDs are clean according to the weight of the child, so finding the right size and your child to try it. Do not buy a PFD that is too large in the hope that he or she grows in her.
aec PFD must fit snugly and not ride up over the child's chin or ears. If more than 7.6 cm between the child's shoulders and the PFD, it is too big and could do more harm than good.
The safety devices should include:
1. A large collar for head support which also has a grab strap on this
2. Waist ties or elastic gathers in front and rear
3. A safety strap that goes between the legs to prevent the device from sliding on the head of the child
4. Sturdy, rustproof buckles and zipper
Parents must lead by example and wear a PFD. Adult PFD, like those made by Stearns, are suitable according to the size of the chest. The PFD should feel comfortable, but still leave room to breathe and move freely.
care of your PFD is as important as finding the right one. PFDs are designed to save lives - they should never be used as a seat cushion or protection for your boat. Using it this way will be composed of its effectiveness.
